3 Social Media Mistakes

Social media websites can either make or break your company. In order to be on the right path when it comes to your social media marketing, make sure you're not doing any of these three things.

1. Only talking about your services and products.
No one want's to have their Twitter or Facebook feed full of advertisements or promotions. Make sure you follow the 80-20 rule. 80 percent of the content you post should be about your customers and 20 percent should be about your company and what you do. This will help you not come off as too corporate or self-serving.

2. Not sharing well with others. 
It's hard not to want to Tweet or Facebook promotional messages about your products, but you have to let your followers know that they are important too. Instead of posting things about your company, Re-tweet or share your followers content. Even reply to a few if you have to. This will show that you have a sense of community within your social networks and it will help you earn your followers trust.

3. Posting insensitive content about sensitive subjects. 
There's a saying that says keep religion and politic opinions to yourself. ESPECIALLY on your companies social media site. If you want people to start trash-talking your brand over social media, then go ahead and post poorly-timed, offensive remarks about sensitive topics. Sometimes it's better to stay away from those topics, even if you want your opinion to be heard. Talk to your family and friends about it, not your thousand of followers on your companies social media site.

  1. Great post! This is so helpful to company's using Facebook, Twitter or other social media sites. It is important that they use them not only as a platform for promotion and sales, but also to better understand the views and opinions of their customers! Using social media as a tool to connect with their consumers and see how they feel about new products or items is key to continued success and longevity for a company.

  2. Love love love your post!!!! Being that I do PR and social media for some of my clients I couldn't agree more with what you have posted. Everyone reading, these tips are essential! You don't want to bombard your audience with non-stop promotions and posts. Try to stick to 2-3 posts daily that way you don't overflow feeds. Think about it... don't do what you wouldn't want to see on your news feed.

  3. Excellent tips. I work in an online marketing firm and we go back and forth with clients about these exact same issues. They need to understand that, in general, the audience on social networks expect a certain amount of human qualities in the way that we post.

    Even though you may have a business page, it is important to post in a similar fashion to how your consumers post and read in their social accounts.

    They are just 3 simple rules a company has to follow, but at the same time are the most common mistakes. The one I've found more interesting is the 80-20 rule. Sometimes as customers we feel "attacked" by promotions about new products, but very little information about the customers and their needs.
    This is great information for new companies who are trying to invest in the world of social media, and sometimes they ave difficulties reaching the right customer.

  5. I've seen quite a few companies ruin their brand image - to me - because they've violated one of these rules.

    I can definitely see how when a company follows these tips they create even more of a buzz for themselves...
    1) If I'm really loyal to a brand I would be more inclined to like/discover other brands/content they associate themselves with
    2) It's made my day before when my favorite bikini line retweeted me! Makes you feel even more loyal to them. Its nice to be recognized, and just not one in a million girls who like the brand.
    3) Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but once a company starts to get aligned with controversial topics and pick sides they are just cutting their audience in half in my opinion.
